PROCESS

My artwork is rooted in textile craft tradition and driven by a desire to explore color and material.  I find a constant source of  inspiration in nature, and in the mingling of atmosphere, landscape, light and color.  I’m drawn to transient moments that try to elude capture.  Sunlight on water or the shifting of shadows are traced and abstracted down into their most essential elements of line, form and color. As I work I seek out new connections, each piece informing and sparking ideas for the next.

I often think of my pieces as woven paintings that are built thread by thread.  In this blend of fine art and weaving, the surface of the artwork becomes something that is carefully crafted on a structural level.  Luminous dimension is created by layering yarns that merge and blend with hand painted fields of color. The tactile surface becomes a plane where colors cross and blend.  Intersecting yarns form points of color that vibrate against each other and enhance the intensity of their neighbors, much like pointillism. From a distance the viewer’s eye blends individual colors, but up close the yarns give up their detail and offer a different experience of the piece.

Hand weaving is a slow and methodical process.  Before any weaving starts, the yarns are wound into groups of the same length.  These groups are then hand painted with dye to form the foundation of the vertical color variations in each piece.  Yarns are carefully counted and threaded onto the loom forming the warp or vertical yarns. During the weaving process order is built with each interwoven end.  The structure of the woven grid organizes and balances hand-painted fields of color formed by gradients painted into the warp and weft. There is a great duality in the process. Order versus chaos, but less like chaos and more like serendipity.  Hand dyeing helps to cultivate chance outcomes.  Weaving is such a planned craft by nature and hand dyeing helps to bring balance.  It allows the process to feel more free and uncontrolled, so that when the final cloth is unrolled from the loom, there is always something new to be discovered.

HOW DOES THE COMMISSION PROCESS START?

The commission process begins with a conversation about your overall space, color ideas and the kind of artwork you are looking for.  Many clients pull images of past artwork from my website galleries as an inspiration starting point.  We can reference past artwork as the foundation for your original new piece, and discuss your needs for sizing and color.

All of our artwork is one-of-a-kind due to the nature of the handmade process.  Much of the work incorporates hand dyed and painted materials, making each piece unique.  For commission projects, we can reference the originals/mock ups as the inspiration starting point for a new piece, but each final piece will be unique and one-of-a-kind.

Once we narrow down a design direction, a project quote is sent outlining the details and pricing for your commission.  When you are ready to proceed with production, you will receive a commission contract and an invoice for payment to start the project.

HOW CAN I HANG MY PIECE?

We can mount your final piece in a few different ways.

Fabric Covered Frame Mounting

Pieces using lightweight yarns are often mounted on a fabric covered frame.  These have finished edges and are wired to hang with no additional framing needed.  This method feels like a painting with clean, square edges.  The stretched frames can also be taken to a framer if you’d like any additional framing on the piece.

Visible Wood Bar Mounting

We can also hang artwork with a wooden bar at the top.  Wooden bar mounting is ideal for pieces with heavier or thicker yarns.  They feel more like a textile tapestry and are hung with a french cleat to ensure flush contact against the wall. The textile hangs organically from the bar and can be rolled for shipping to save costs.

Hidden Wood Bar Mounting

Artwork is mounted from a flat wood bar that is hidden in the back.  The textile drapes over the front and a metal cleat is attached to the back for hanging.  Often a metal dowel is added in a hidden casing at the bottom to provide even weight when hanging.

DO YOU FRAME ARTWORK?

Most of our artwork is mounted in some way and generally ready to hang unless otherwise noted. At this time we do not offer additional custom framing of the artwork.  Once you receive your piece, we recommend working with a local art framing professional to choose the frame that works perfectly with your space.

HOW DO I CARE FOR MY ARTWORK?

All of our artwork is hand woven and hand dyed, and must be handled with care. Weavings should be displayed in a cool, dry location, avoiding moisture and direct sunlight. Please keep away from anything that might pull or snag the fibers. Avoid touching the surface to keep dirt and oils away from the materials. To dust the surface, use a soft feather duster or gentle handheld vacuum to very carefully clean the artwork. If your artwork includes fringe, please use clean hands to gently straighten and zhuzh the fringe on sides or bottom of the artwork.

HOW ARE COMMISSIONS PRICED?

Commission pricing is based on size, material and complexity of the project.  Commission pricing generally begins at $1,200 USD.   Commissions are priced 30-50% higher than in-stock artwork due to the custom nature of the project. If you have a specific budget in mind, please let me know and we can discuss sizing options that work.

Commissions are not available for a trade discount

DO YOU OFFER A TRADE DISCOUNT?

Our trade program is open to trade professionals— corporate/hospitality art buyers, interior designers and art consultants. We offer a 10% trade discount on available artwork purchases over $1,200.

Commission projects are not available for a trade discount.  We do not offer a gallery/wholesale pricing structure. Trade invoices must be paid via wire transfer/ACH.

CAN YOU SEND A MATERIAL SAMPLE?

We can review sample needs on a case by case basis. Please reach out with your specific request. During commission production, we are able to send progress photos but generally do not provide physical sampling due to the nature of the hand dyeing process.

DO YOU SEND A PROJECT QUOTE AND CONTRACT?

Once we narrow down a design direction, a project quote is sent outlining the details and pricing for your commission.  When you are ready to proceed with production, you will receive a commission contract and an invoice for payment. Our contract will include all project details including scope, deliverables, costs and terms for the commission. Our contract is required to start your project and no outside contracts will be signed. Please note that an artwork or commission purchase does not transfer any intellectual property rights or rights to reproduction.

WHAT FORM OF PAYMENT IS ACCEPTED?

Invoices for payment are sent via Stripe and can be paid via credit card.  Trade project invoices can be paid via ACH/Wire transfer.  100% payment for all custom projects is due upon receipt of invoice and signing of commission contract.  Pricing does not include shipping/insurance/packaging which are invoiced when the piece is complete and prior to shipping.

WHEN CAN I EXPECT THE COMMISSION TO BE COMPLETED?

Lead time is generally 6-8 weeks from payment of invoice, but will be confirmed once we discuss project scope.  Lead time depends on other projects at the time of confirming the project.  We generally have a project queue so I recommend booking your project 4-6 months before your target installation.

HOW IS THE ARTWORK SHIPPED?

Commissions are shipped via UPS Ground.  Shipping costs are separate from the artwork pricing and will be invoiced upon completion of the work.  Shipping costs include insurance and signature confirmation for the artwork.  If the commission is too large to ship via regular UPS, we are able to use freight to transport the artwork.

DO YOU OFFER STUDIO VISITS OR CLASSES?

Our studio is currently operating in our private home space, so we do not offer studio visits, workshops or classes at this time.
